We were approached by our clients to look at options for updating the original dilapidated conservatory facing the main road to one of the principal houses in the Mapesbury Conservation Area.

But we were struck by the discrepancy between the gracious and spacious formal lounge, drawing and entertaining rooms of the house and the dark and outdated kitchen and family dining room, located away from natural light and approached through a narrow and low corridor. Our clients were encouraged to think about remodelling the back of the house to open up and bring light into an open plan living space and kitchen, linked to the family dining room by generously wide stairs, all bathed in light from folding glass doors on two walls, which can open the room up completely to a generous decked area and the garden.

The bespoke joinery throughout the house included a jib door to match existing wall panelling of the lounge to provide a new access to the new dining room and kitchen, modernising the circulation of the house while retaining the charm of the latter.
