The project consisted of the extension and total remodelling of a sub-modernist detached house in Mill Hill.

The clients, a couple one of whom is Japanese, loved their extensive garden but were unhappy with the cramp circulation and living accommodation. Their brief was for expansive living spaces which would link well with the garden but which were flexible and zone-able in a Japanese sense.

The house was totally remodelled, retaining only 3 walls, to enjoy a 6x11m living room which opens onto a fully glazed conservatory. The conservatory links the living room, the kitchen and a separate guest suite to each other and the enclosed patio and garden through folding glass doors. In the summer the open doors bring the outdoors right in winter the conservatory allows the family to retreat to the interior while still enjoying the light and view of the garden through the conservatory. The living room includes a cozy corner where the family can lounge around a fire.
